The Ancient Craft of Ajrakh
The Ajrakh craft is 4000 years old. When India was united, the art of Ajrakh was practiced on the banks of the Sindhu river in present-day Pakistan. Later, the king of Kutch was drawn to Ajrakh and invited some artisans to come and work for him. In the village of Dhamadka, on the banks of a river, the artisans created Ajrakh textiles.
The Art of Natural Dyeing
Around 1950, Ajrakh was being made for the Maldhari community in Kutch. However, after an earthquake hit the area, the river dried up, and a new village was born, named Ajrakhpur. Today, Ajrakh textiles are made in both Ajrakhpur and Dhamadka.
Ajrakh textiles are dyed using only vegetable dyes. The cloth stays warm in winters and cool in summers, making it comfortable to wear. For more information, please contact us. Thank you.
